Welcome
Discussions about the value of universities/humanities/social sciences have been going on for quite a few years. Catherine Malabou, Martha Nussbaum, Jacques Derrida, Stefan Collini, Jonathan Bate, and Terry Eagleton, among many others, have debated the role, function, and future of universities both within and outside universities.
Taking its title from Stefan Collini's recent defence of universities in the face of growing marketisation, this reading group aims to bring together all those interested in education - whether they are attached to a university or not. Collini asks us to consider what we understand by 'university' and what we think its role is (or should be). This is a question that reverberates for many of us currently based in Cyprus who are witnessing university authorities shaping strategies and politics and student (and adjunct) numbers growing.
The group meets once a month at the Kallipoleos campus. Readings will be posted here, and it is also hoped that participants can use this space to share comments and thoughts.
If you are interested to participate, please e-mail Christos Hadjiyiannis at chadji19@ucy.ac.cy
